The Golden Hat Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 by Kate Winslet, Oscar-winning actress and mother of two. The foundation is dedicated to eliminating barriers for people with autism around the world, and creating an environment that holds these individuals as intellectually capable.
Kate met Margret Dagmar Ericsdottir, the foundation director, when she narrated A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back to Autism, a documentary about a Margret’ son Keli. After meeting Margret, Kate was deeply touched by and the idea for the Golden Hat Foundation was born. The foundation’s name comes from one of the first poems Keli wrote using his letterboard.
In 2011, the publishing company Simon & Schuster published a book by Kate, The Golden Hat, a collection of self-portraits from celebrities and cultural luminaries, all “wearing a magical hat” to support autism awareness and outreach.
